After receiving new information from Porter Adventist Hospital on April 4th, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment conducted a second on-site survey at the hospital the following day.

Upon completion of the second survey, the health department updated their official statement to say they are investigating whether or not there are additional patients who may have been potentially exposed to HIV and Hepatitis, outside of the initial 18 month time frame reported by the hospital.

Improper Sterilization Claims

According to a statement released by Colorado state health officials, patients who underwent orthopedic or spine surgery at Porter Adventist Hospital in Denver between July 21st, 2016 and February 20, 2018 may have been exposed to Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, or HIV.

According to the Chief Medical Officer for the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, Larry Wolk, the cause of the exposure was attributed to an infection-control breach involving surgical instruments.

“The process for cleaning surgical instruments following orthopedic and spine surgeries was found to be inadequate, which may have compromised the sterilization of the instruments,” read the statement from Wolk.  Wolk also said that the health department was not aware of any patient infections related to the breach at this time, and that the risk of infection is thought to be low.

In the letter sent to patients, it was explained that the sterilization problem involved the first step in a pre-cleaning process the surgical instruments were put through before undergoing an intense heat sterilization process.
